In a bid to prevent flooding and gridlock in Mile 2, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has commenced cleaning up the gutters in the area.
It was observed that employees of CCECC were clearing out refuse such as Styrofoam plates, bottles, and paper bags.
Mr. Aguntho Edward Bolaji, a CCECC staff member, said, “We want to prevent traffic on the road when it’s flooded because immediately the rain starts, everywhere is blocked because of refuse in the gutter.
“We need to clear the gutter because it is already blocked and filled with nylon, cans, and all this takeaway stuff.”
Mr. Bolaji stated that his team will ensure that the gutters from the newly opened Mile 2 bridge to Signal Barracks are cleared.
Mr. Chijioke Hillary, CCECC staff, implored the government to expand the narrow gutters in Mile 2.
“We did a lot of work last year. We cleared the gutters last year and they called us this year to clear the gutters again. What I’m trying to say is that there’s no way water can flow very well unless they expand the gutter.
“The government has to take an interest in expanding the gutter because when it rains it causes traffic.”
Mr. Hillary implored road users to avoid dumping refuse on the road. It’s not good to throw pure water sachets or take away packs on the road.
Shop owners along Mile 2 refused to speak at the time of filing this report.
