A day after Multichoice announced the increment of DStv and GOtv subscriptions, residents of Festival Mall spoke to Amuwo News about the new rates.
Multichoice Nigeria, owner of DStv and GOtv, announced that subscription rates have been increased and will take effect on April 1, 2022.
Here is what they had to say:
Mathias Daniel, Security Personnel

I am going to buy one for my family because I see it as a necessity. I am not happy about the increment, but I need a DSTV decoder to make my wife happy.
Banker: Anthony Bidoku

It is quite unfortunate, but it is nothing new to Nigerians. There is inflation, so it is expected that prices will go up, but I really don’t appreciate this price increase, but I guess it’s due to the monopoly power they have. If there was competition, I don’t think they would have had the chance to do that. In Nigeria, people do things without any regulation. There is no consideration for the masses. They should understand that Nigerians are going through a lot. I don’t think this is going on in other countries, but I feel Nigeria is a place where you can do things and get away with them. We are frustrated and this needs to be looked into. DSTV is a big company, and they can give back to the community by leaving the price the way it is.
Donald Elvis is a marketing consultant for DStv.
Nigerians have been condoning the price increment, but most men will tell you there is nothing they can do about it because if the man is not interested, the wife and kids need to be entertained. If we are being honest, Multichoice has the best programs. You can’t blame Multichoice for this increment. Yesterday I bought a generator for N365,000, but two years ago I bought this generator for N180,000. The economy is not favorable to anyone.
Engineer Gboyega Oladapo,
The increment is not favorable in any way. I only watch when I am at home, so who uses the subscription when I am at work? I won’t be subscribing anymore.
Abubakar Ismail, Hair Stylist

Normally I pay about N18,000 and it’s unfair for them to increase it to N21,000. I will have to think about it to know if I will continue to subscribe or stop.
Cynthia Otu is a student.

I have DSTV in school. I don’t think I will renew my subscription when I get to school because all I watch is Nickelodeon and cooking stations.
Mustapha Mosawel, Chef

For me, it is important to have this kind of system in Nigeria. First of all, it will introduce you to the world through channels like Arab Chanel, English Channel, American Channel, and more. But the former price was high, and now it will be higher. They should think about whether people patronize them or not. We know they don’t have competition and they are the best, but this increment is unfair.
Paul Okpara, Non-Pensionable Officer

I am sure I will continue to use DStv. If a plan is too expensive, I’ll subscribe to a more affordable plan.
Michael Oyewale, Retail Manager,
I believe there should be a review on the prices because they are outrageous. I feel we are being marginalized and bringing down the prices will do us a lot of good. I hope they will look into this. We’d appreciate it if they did, and we’ll continue to use DStv.
Engineer Nicholas Ovwie

I saw a report yesterday about this increment, and I think it’s not fair. I spend like 3 hours watching DStv daily. They need to switch to pay per view and not increase prices. They are not helping us.
